Introduction to Reflexology

Foot Massage Therapy

Reflexology is a gentle, non-invasive complementary therapy that works with specific reflex points on the feet, face or hands. These reflex points are believed to correspond with different areas, organs and systems of the body.

Reflexology has ancient roots, with early forms of hand and foot work often traced back to ancient Egyptian times. One of the most well-known historical references is a wall painting found in the tomb of Ankhmahor in Saqqara, Egypt, dating back to around 2330 BC, which appears to show people receiving treatment to the hands and feet. Modern reflexology, as we know it today, developed much later through the work of Dr William Fitzgerald and Eunice Ingham, who helped shape the foot maps and reflexology techniques still used in practice today.

The treatment is deeply relaxing and is designed to support the body’s natural ability to rebalance. Reflexology may help calm the nervous system, ease stress and tension, support sleep, encourage circulation and promote a greater sense of overall wellbeing.

Many clients come for reflexology when they feel stressed, overwhelmed, tired, emotionally depleted or physically tense. It may also be supportive for people experiencing ongoing discomfort, hormonal changes, migraines, fatigue, grief, anxiety, poor sleep, fibromyalgia, arthritis and general nervous system overwhelm.

Reflexology is a complementary therapy and does not replace medical care, diagnosis or treatment. Where appropriate, medical consent may be required, especially for complex medical conditions, cancer care, recent surgery, pregnancy or serious health concerns.
